First slopestyle of the year at Cypress! "Store Wars" pitted local reps from brands like Voleurz and Skull Candy against eachother in the park. There was also an open division, which probably drew more attention than organizers had expected.
The snow: ICEY. While it was a perfectly clear night for the event, hard pack conditions were fast and unforgiving. The course itself seemed to be popular among the skiers and snowboarders. It started off with an elevated log jib, followed by a flat-down box, 35 foot table, then to a 20 foot table or battleship box, and ended with a 10 foot high wall ride.
Competitors were supposed to have qualifier runs between 5:00 and 8:00. Some were pushing themselves pretty hard, and with crashes and hard landings, ruts formed quickly in the hard pack. Between runs the park crew had to work to keep the features in shape. This caused delays and the qualifiers went much longer than expected. By 8:15 some had only taken 2 runs.
Organizers decided to call an end to the event without a final. The large number of entries and deterring condition of the course were both factors in this decision. Scores from the qualifying round were then tallied up and used to determine some winners. The prize pool included cash, season passes, and gear from Skull Candy, Voleurz, Westbeach and Timeless Snow and Skate shop.
